Hospital and health system trustees are charged with governing vitally important and complex community institutions. To help accelerate onboarding, HTNYS’ orientation program provides a comprehensive overview of healthcare governance and the fundamental roles and responsibilities of healthcare trustees in New York state.

This program is appropriate for trustees new to their role and for existing board members as a governance refresher. Led by a national governance expert and HANYS staff, this session will provide a tailored scan of New York’s hospital system and an overview of leading governance practices, including the board’s role in quality and patient safety.

Kick off the conference with a keynote address from Michael J. Dowling, Chief Executive Officer Emeritus, Northwell Health.

5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Mingle and get settled in at our welcome cocktail reception at the glamorous Turquoise Tiger lounge.

Friday, Sept. 18

7:45 a.m. – 4 p.m.

  • Practical assessments about the current and future state of healthcare and turning disruption into solutions with Stephen K. Klasko, MD, MBA, former president, Thomas Jefferson University and former chief executive officer, Jefferson Health.
  • Optimizing the board-CEO relationship and an interactive Q&A on governance dilemmas and innovative solutions with governance expert Todd Linden.
  • The healthcare trustee’s role when contract negotiations with health insurance providers go public.
  • An inside look at the New York State Rural Health Transformation Program.
  • DOH’s top priorities, the state’s H.R. 1 response and notable healthcare initiatives in the state budget with DOH Commissioner James V. McDonald, MD, MPH.
  • Presentation of the Healthcare Trustee Leadership Award.
  • Facilitating conversations between acute and post-acute care partners to improve transitions and care delivery.
  • Tips for how trustees can answer unexpected questions in unexpected places within the community.
  • How healthcare trustees can strengthen their role as philanthropic leaders within their organizations.
  • A deep dive into the evolving expectations of healthcare consumers and building a patient-centric framework to reshape care.
